The chemical substance 2-(4-phenyl benzoyl) benzoic acid has the molecular formula C22H16O3. Phenylbenzoyl benzoic acid, or PBB acid, is another name for it.

Two benzene rings make up the substance, which is joined by a carboxylic acid group and a phenylbenzoyl group. It is a white, crystalline substance that dissolves in organic solvents like ethanol and acetone but is insoluble in water.

The manufacture of liquid crystal materials, which are utilised in electrical displays, begins with PBB acid. Its antimicrobial and anticancer qualities have also been researched.

By reacting 4-phenylbenzoyl chloride with benzoic acid in the presence of a catalyst, such as triethylamine, the chemical is created. Recrystallization from an appropriate solvent allows for the purification of the end product.
