Hexmethonium Dibromide has been used for a variety of therapeutic purposes, including hypertension. This chemical has been largely superseded by more specific medications in most cases, despite its widespread use as a research tool. It was used to treat hypertension, but it was never licensed and was phased out due to the lack of a specific treatment. It is safe to use. The gastrointestinal tract absorbs hexamethonium poorly and it does not cross the blood-brain barrier. It is now commonly utilized as a research tool.
